A friend of mine did a full HVAC replacement in a cramped mechanical room that looked like a fire hazard before he touched it. After he was done, it looked like a mechanical room from a magazine. He didn't take a single photo. That job could have brought him three more like it. Instead it brought him nothing except a check.
Before and after photos are proof. In a business built on trust, proof is everything.
Why They Work Better Than Any Ad
An ad tells people you're good. A before and after shows them. That difference matters more than most contractors realize. People hiring a contractor are making a decision with real money based on nothing but faith. A photo of a specific job in a specific house says: this is what you'll get. That's more persuasive than any headline you can write.
They also work on every platform. Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, your website's gallery page, and even texted directly to a prospect who's comparing you with someone else. One good before and after works everywhere.
Making It a Habit
The problem isn't that contractors don't see the value. It's that nobody remembers to take the photos in the moment. The job is done, the customer's happy, the tech is thinking about the next call, and the camera stays in his pocket.
Fix this with a process, not a reminder. Put "take before photo" as the first step on every job checklist. Before anything gets touched, snap a photo. At the end of every job, the last step is a photo. Build it into the routine the same way you build in testing before you leave the site.
What Makes a Good Photo
You don't need a camera crew. A modern phone is plenty. Good lighting matters more than equipment. Open a door or turn on a light before shooting. Get close enough that the subject fills the frame. Take three photos and use the best one.
For HVAC: photograph the equipment, the connections, the air handler, and the thermostat. Before shows the old or broken state. After shows clean, new, professional work. That's all you need.
Caption the photos when you post them. "Replaced a 22-year-old system in [City]. New 3-ton heat pump, matched load calc to the house, customer's energy bill dropped 30% the first month." That caption tells a story that the photo alone can't tell.
Where to Use Them
Post them to your Google Business Profile weekly. That alone improves your local search ranking. Put them on Facebook and Instagram with your service area tagged. Add a gallery page to your website. Text them to prospects who are on the fence.
Start with the next job you do today. By end of month you'll have 20 portfolio pieces you didn't have before.

Dina grew up in the trades. Her father was a contractor, then a building inspector, and the job site was her classroom long before any formal one was. She went on to own her own contracting company, which is where she first felt the pain of running a skilled trade business on bad software and worse spreadsheets. A love of data pulled her into programming, and the two worlds eventually collided into WerkOps - software built by someone who has actually been on the truck.
