How This HVAC Load Calculator Works

This tool uses simplified Manual J methodology — the ACCA standard for residential HVAC load calculations. It estimates heating and cooling loads based on building envelope characteristics, climate data, and internal gains. Here is what each input controls:

Square Footage
The total conditioned floor area drives the base load. Larger homes have proportionally higher loads, but envelope quality matters more than size alone.
Climate Zone
ASHRAE climate zones set the design temperature deltas — the difference between indoor comfort setpoints and outdoor design conditions. Zone 7 (very cold) has 6x the heating load of Zone 1 (very hot humid).
Insulation Quality
Wall, ceiling, and floor U-values determine conductive heat transfer through the building envelope. Poor insulation can double your load vs a well-insulated house of the same size.
Window Area & Type
Windows are the biggest variable. Solar heat gain through glass is the dominant cooling load driver. Low-E coatings and triple pane dramatically reduce both heating and cooling loads.
Duct Location
Ducts in an unconditioned attic add 15-25% to the calculated load due to conductive losses and duct leakage. This is one of the most overlooked factors in residential HVAC sizing.
Occupants
Each occupant generates approximately 250 BTU/h of sensible heat. Occupant load is a meaningful factor in smaller homes and tight envelopes.
