A lead magnet is supposed to be a trade: the visitor gives you their email, you give them something genuinely useful. The problem is most contractor lead magnets are neither genuine nor useful. "Sign up for our newsletter" is not a lead magnet. "Get our free maintenance checklist" might be, if the checklist actually helps someone.
The Standard That Makes It Work
A good lead magnet passes this test: would someone pay for this if they had to? Not necessarily much, but would they value it enough that getting it free feels like a win? A homeowner's guide to their HVAC system that explains how to do basic maintenance, how to read error codes, and what noises mean what could easily be a $7 ebook. Give it away and you've made a positive impression before you've done any work for them.
A one-page PDF that took you 20 minutes to make and contains information they could find in 30 seconds on Google is not a lead magnet. It's a trick, and people feel it.
The Right Format
PDFs work well because they're downloadable, feel like something of substance, and can be professional-looking with minimal design effort. A 5-10 page guide with clear headings, photos from real jobs, and actionable information is a solid lead magnet for a contractor audience.
Checklists convert well because they're immediately useful. "Spring HVAC Prep Checklist: 8 Things to Do Before You Turn on the AC" is something a homeowner can actually use the week they download it.
Video content can work as a lead magnet if it's genuinely valuable: a 10-minute walkthrough of how to evaluate whether your system needs replacement, or a guide to reading your energy bill and understanding why costs are high.
The Follow-Up Is Half the Point
The email address you capture is an asset only if you use it. The sequence after the download matters as much as the lead magnet itself. Send the download immediately. Follow up two days later with one related tip. A week later, share one related piece of content. Then occasionally, a relevant service offer. This sequence warms a cold lead into a warm one without overwhelming anyone.

Founder, WerkOps
Dina grew up in the trades. Her father was a contractor, then a building inspector, and the job site was her classroom long before any formal one was. She went on to own her own contracting company, which is where she first felt the pain of running a skilled trade business on bad software and worse spreadsheets. A love of data pulled her into programming, and the two worlds eventually collided into WerkOps - software built by someone who has actually been on the truck.
