Yelp for Contractors: Worth It or Not?

By Dina Good, Founder, WerkOps · July 5, 2026

Yelp's sales team is aggressive. They will call you, and call you again, and present a compelling case for why you need to advertise with them. I've spoken with contractors who swear by Yelp and contractors who refuse to let their business be listed there at all. The truth, as usual, is more nuanced than either camp admits.

The Free Listing: Always Worth Having

Having a claimed Yelp profile costs nothing and can only help you. People search Yelp for contractors even if you're not paying for advertising. If your profile is unclaimed or empty, you're missing those searches. If it's claimed and complete with photos, updated hours, and current services, you're capturing people who specifically use Yelp to find local businesses.

Claim your free listing. Fill it out completely. Respond to every review. That much is unambiguously worth doing.

The Paid Advertising: More Complicated

Yelp's paid advertising program is a cost-per-click model where you bid for placement in search results. The ROI varies significantly by market. In densely competitive urban areas with a lot of Yelp traffic, some contractors find it generates solid leads. In smaller markets where Yelp has lower penetration, it can feel like paying for visibility nobody sees.

The common contractor complaints about Yelp advertising are: the leads are lower quality than Google leads, you pay for clicks from people who aren't actually in your service area, and Yelp's algorithm can seem to bury negative reviews from paying advertisers (creating distrust among informed consumers). The last point specifically concerns some contractors who feel the platform isn't transparent about how it handles reviews.

How to Evaluate If It's Working

Before signing an annual contract with Yelp, ask for a month-to-month arrangement to test it. Track every lead source in your system. At 90 days, look at how many booked jobs came from Yelp, what you paid, and what the average ticket was. If the numbers work, continue. If they don't, don't let a salesperson talk you into continuing something that isn't producing.

Where Google Usually Wins

For most HVAC contractors, Google Business Profile plus Google Local Service Ads produces higher quality leads at lower cost than Yelp advertising. Not everyone, but most. If your Google presence is weak, fixing that is almost always a better investment than starting a Yelp ad campaign. Get Google right first, then evaluate platforms like Yelp with the remaining budget.

Dina grew up in the trades. Her father was a contractor, then a building inspector, and the job site was her classroom long before any formal one was. She went on to own her own contracting company, which is where she first felt the pain of running a skilled trade business on bad software and worse spreadsheets. A love of data pulled her into programming, and the two worlds eventually collided into WerkOps - software built by someone who has actually been on the truck.
