Heat pump jobs often require coordination work: maybe upgrading the electrical panel, maybe ductwork modifications, maybe a new thermostat. That's not complicated, but it requires coordinating multiple trades and managing customer expectations through a longer timeline than a straight AC swap.
Positioning This as Your Opportunity
Most of your competitors aren't trained on heat pumps yet. Some of them are actively avoiding the market because it feels unfamiliar. That's your opening. Get your techs certified. Run a few installations. Build case studies with real customer results. Then market specifically to the customers asking about them.
Here's what I've seen work: contractors who frame heat pumps as "the sensible choice for long-term savings" rather than "the latest technology trend" win more sales. Customers want to know the payback period. Show them. They want to know it'll work in January. Explain why modern systems handle it. They want to know you know what you're doing. Prove it with training credentials and real projects.
The Business Case
Heat pump jobs typically carry higher margins than standard replacements. Your material costs are higher, but your selling price goes up faster. Your labor is more involved, but you can price for that expertise. The customers willing to invest in heat pumps are usually not the ones squeezing you on price.
Start with training for your best techs. Then take on a few jobs. Document what works. Use those projects to educate your sales team on how to position heat pumps to the right customers. Within six months, you'll have the confidence to compete on every relevant bid.
