A customer called me a few years ago because their new smart thermostat wasn't working with their existing system. The previous contractor had installed it and left when it wouldn't connect. I drove over, looked at the wiring, realized the old system didn't have a common wire, and fixed it in 45 minutes. I also picked up a maintenance agreement before I left because I was the first contractor who didn't leave them with a blinking thermostat.
Smart home HVAC isn't complicated once you understand it. And customers will pay a premium for a contractor who does.
What "Smart" Actually Means in HVAC
At the basic level, smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell T6 Pro) connect to WiFi and allow remote control via app, scheduling based on occupancy, and integration with voice assistants. Most HVAC systems installed in the last 15 years can support them. The common wire (C-wire) is the most frequent installation issue because older systems often don't have one routed to the thermostat location.
More advanced is variable-speed or modulating equipment that communicates with smart controls to adjust capacity continuously rather than cycling on and off. These systems require equipment and controls from the same manufacturer ecosystem in most cases. The installation is more involved but the comfort outcome is meaningfully better.
Zoning Systems
Multi-zone systems use dampers in the ductwork controlled by a zone panel to deliver heating and cooling to specific areas independently. They're popular in two-story homes where the upstairs runs 8-10 degrees warmer in summer. Understanding zoning panel wiring and damper control is worth a few hours of study if you don't already have it. Jobs involving zoning command better margins and are less price-shopped.
What Customers Are Looking For
App control of their system. Energy monitoring. Alerts when something isn't working right. Integration with Alexa or Google Home. These are not complicated features to install but they require you to be confident walking a customer through the setup. If you can't set up a Nest with a homeowner watching, you look like you don't know what you're doing even if the mechanical work was perfect.
Take an hour on a Sunday. Buy a smart thermostat if you don't have one. Set it up on your own home. Read the wiring guide. The confidence that comes from having done it once makes the next customer conversation completely different.
