March in most HVAC markets is weird. It's too warm for heating calls and too early for anyone to panic about their AC. The phones slow down, the techs start having availability, and the less prepared owner sits around hoping April comes fast.
The prepared owner uses March to get six weeks ahead. Here's how.
Pre-Season Tune-Up Campaigns
Pull your customer list. Everyone who hasn't had a tune-up in the last 12 months gets a call or text: "We're scheduling spring AC tune-ups now before the season gets crazy. We have some great availability in March and early April before our schedule fills up. Want to get on the calendar?"
A percentage of them will say yes. You're doing work that would have waited until June and spreading your revenue more evenly across the year. The customer gets priority scheduling before summer demand peaks. Everyone wins.
Training in the Gaps
When did you last send a tech to manufacturer training? Heat pump certification? Refrigerant handling updates? This is the time. When call volume is low, pulling a tech for two days of training doesn't hurt your schedule the way it would in August. Invest in your team's skills during the gaps and your capabilities go up heading into the season that matters most.
Business Projects That Got Pushed
There's always a list of business things you've been meaning to do. Update the website. Rebuild the estimate template. Fix the dispatch process. Audit your pricing. Set up the maintenance agreement program you've been thinking about for two years. Slow season is when you do that list. If you spend slow season on the business instead of complaining about the slowness, you come into summer running a slightly better operation than the one you left fall with.
Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance
Your trucks take abuse during busy season. Spring is when you catch the issues before they become breakdowns at 4pm on a Tuesday in July. Schedule service for every vehicle. Check your tool inventory. Restock parts you ran through last summer. A truck that breaks down in busy season costs you ten times what the maintenance would have.
Slow season is a gift when you treat it that way. It's the one time of year you have a little breathing room. Use it.

Dina grew up in the trades. Her father was a contractor, then a building inspector, and the job site was her classroom long before any formal one was. She went on to own her own contracting company, which is where she first felt the pain of running a skilled trade business on bad software and worse spreadsheets. A love of data pulled her into programming, and the two worlds eventually collided into WerkOps - software built by someone who has actually been on the truck.
