I know contractors who have spent $3,000 on a professional brand video that got 200 views on YouTube and generated zero leads. I also know a guy who started filming short "here's what I found" videos from job sites with his phone and has 4,000 local followers who call him directly. The second guy spends nothing.
Video works for contractors because the work is visual, and most homeowners have no idea what's going on inside their systems. Show them. They'll trust you for it.
What to Film
Film the problem before you fix it. A capacitor that's bulging. A coil that's completely clogged with debris. Ductwork disconnected in a crawlspace. Then film the fix. You don't need to narrate a documentary. Thirty seconds of "here's what this homeowner's system looked like when I got here, here's what I found, here's what we did" is enough.
Educational content also works well. "Here's why your AC runs all day without cooling your house." "Here's how to tell if your refrigerant is low." "Here's the difference between a tune-up and a full inspection." Homeowners search for this stuff. If your video shows up, you're the trusted source before they even call anyone.
Where to Post It
Short videos (under 60 seconds) go on Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts simultaneously. Same video, multiple platforms, five extra minutes of work. Longer educational content (2-5 minutes) works well on YouTube and Facebook. Google indexes YouTube videos, so educational content there can show up in search results for years.
Consistency beats quality at this stage. One mediocre video per week for six months beats one polished video per quarter. The algorithm rewards regular posting. Your audience builds gradually. Give it time.
Getting Over the Camera Discomfort
Almost every contractor I know who posts video says the first three videos were genuinely uncomfortable to make. By video ten, it's normal. You're the expert. You know what you're talking about. The camera is just a way to share that knowledge with more people than you can reach in person.
Film one video on your next interesting job. Don't overthink it. Just show what you found and what you did about it. That's the whole format. The equipment is the phone in your pocket.

Dina grew up in the trades. Her father was a contractor, then a building inspector, and the job site was her classroom long before any formal one was. She went on to own her own contracting company, which is where she first felt the pain of running a skilled trade business on bad software and worse spreadsheets. A love of data pulled her into programming, and the two worlds eventually collided into WerkOps - software built by someone who has actually been on the truck.
